I recently heard about the new pop up Lone Wolf ice bar at Stack and I had to try it. I’ve heard stories about ice bars in London and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do but there’s never been anything like this in Newcastle. I went on a Saturday and opted for the full Premium Adult package which includes your coat and glove hire, an ice shot, glass of prosecco (or beer) and a hot chocolate to warm you up when you come out. At £19.95 per person for 20 minutes in the bar I had high expectations.
When we arrived we were given our coats which were huge, grey and fluffy with big hoods, very cozy! Everyone has a prebooked time slot so you go in as a group and the door shuts behind you. The room is quite dark with eerie blue lighting, you feel the chill on your face but the coat is very good at keeping you warm. The bar is completely made of ice, as well as the seats and various impressive ice sculptures. My fave was the motorcycle that you can sit on (drafty if you’re wearing a skirt!).
The gloves provided don’t work with touch screen phones so they had to come off. For a place that advertises its ‘insta opportunities’ it could maybe think about investing in some touch screen gloves. Having said that, my hands didn’t feel too cold so it was fine to keep them off when taking photos.
The 20 minutes go pretty fast but it’s long enough to get photos taken with and on everything and it feels like enough time, no one wants to turn into a human ice sculpture! When we left the bar and walked outside it felt like stepping off a plane in the Caribbean with the temperature contrast (and this was late February in the north of England!).
It definitely met my expectations as a fun and different thing to try on a night out and it’s one to tick of the to do list.
Would I go again? Probably not, it’s the sort of place where once you’ve done it you’ve done it. At almost £1 a minute it’s not the type of place you’d just pop for a casual drink. Worth going for the experience and to have a date night with a difference though.
