Marco Polo

Marco Polo

Marco Polo has been in Newcastle for a very long time but for some reason I have never been until tonight, I don’t know why because I love Italian food. We actually got an Itison voucher from a friend for a meal there which was for pizza, pasta or risotto for two. We had a bit of late night Thursday shopping to do so I thought it would be a great post shopping treat.

We went in the door on the far right of the picture and sat in that first room, it’s like a small intimate Italian restaurant, you wouldn’t know the rest of it was there. I still don’t really know how it’s all connected. It had a good atmosphere and we could watch the bustle of the street outside as we dined.

With our voucher we could order anything from the pasta, pizza or risotto section of the menu except a couple of prawn dishes. The menu looked delicious and although I was very tempted to order the Risotto Pollo, my dinner companion was ordering pizza which is my favourite food ever and I didn’t want to get pizza envy so I caved. So he ordered the Proscuitto e Funghi (Italian ham, mushroom & oregano) and I ordered Florentina (blue cheese, pine nuts, spinach and egg). We also opted for a side of home cooked chips to share. Service was good, we didn’t have to wait very long for our meals to arrive. The pizza’s both looked and tasted great. The base was fresh, the egg on mine was cooked perfectly, the blue cheese was delicious and the pine nuts just added a bit of extra texture. The chips looked better than they tasted, I would say they were slightly under-cooked, some of the thicker ones were a bit hard in the middle but we still managed to get through most of them.

I’m now sitting at home with my feet up feeling rather full (and I didn’t even eat it all) and I’ve definitely had my pizza fix satisfied.

Would I go back? Yes, I can’t believe I haven’t been before!
