Triple A Food Tour

Triple A Food Tour

Today I was lucky enough to be part of the first Triple A Food Tour. It’s a walking tour described as a chance to experience and enjoy Newcastle’s culinary scene and vibrant atmosphere, and it does exactly that and more. We were greeted by our lovely guide Hannah at Grey’s Monument who told us a bit more about what the tour entailed as we waited for other members of the group to join us. When we were all assembled we set off on the tour which led us to the Grainger Market, Central Arcade, along Grey Street past the Theatre Royal, down to the quayside, and over the Millenium Bridge. On the way we stopped at some of the best food and drink venues in the city while Hannah filled us in on some of the history and facts about Newcastle. As a local I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about Newcastle but I still learnt some new things and tried some amazing food venues I didn’t even know existed. I’ll do some separate posts about each of the venues we visited but here are the highlights…

The tour was a combination of well known landmarks, as well as some places that are off the beaten track. It’s the perfect way to explore Newcastle on foot and try a wide range of the foodie delights the city has to offer. I loved that the tour was focused around independent and local businesses and there was a real personal touch from each place we visited with people there to talk us through the food and drink we were trying, from how the beer was brewed and the village the wine was from, to where the oysters were caught. Everyone on the tour was surprised at just how much food and drink was included and it was all top quality. I definitely came away with a full belly and slightly tipsy (the coffee at the end helped to sober me up). It’s such good value for money and a one of a kind experience.

There really is something for everyone on this tour, whether your a tourist wanting a fast track sample of Geordie culture, or a born and bred local wanting to learn and try a few new things. Keep posted for some more pictures and details of the individual places we visited, but in the meantime here’s a sample of some of the delicious food and drinks we got to experience!

Mother’s Day at San Lorenzo

Mother’s Day at San Lorenzo

San Lorenzo in Gosforth has been my favourite Italian restaurant forever (even the first time round). It’s always my go to place when I want a guaranteed perfect pizza, a Prosecco fueled ladies night, or a good place to catch up with friends. Yes I’m a regular, but I have never had a Sunday lunch there until now!

I wanted to take my Mam out for Mother’s Day. After looking at a few places that had special Mothers Day lunches advertised with inflated prices, I decided to stick with what I know and book San Lorenzo. I was a bit hesitant going with Sunday lunch because I just love the Italian menu but we saw other people’s and the Yorkshire puddings sold it.

We were a table of 4, 2 of us had chicken and 2 had lamb off the special board. They didn’t let me down, the meals were up to the usual high standards and we all enjoyed every last bite. The chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly and that carrot mash is so creamy and tasty. We were so eager to tuck in when it arrived I forgot to take a picture straight away. Even when I got the camera out I couldn’t make anyone put their knives and forks down for me to take a photo so here they are enjoying their meals…

We finished with sticky toffee pudding which was perfect!

It’s not just the food that makes San Lorenzo my favourite restaurant, the bustling atmosphere and friendly staff make it a relaxed and enjoyable environment. A big shout out to Dori and Olly who always make us feel so welcome, see you again soon! 🙂

The Naked Deli

The Naked Deli

Working in Newcastle City Centre I’m always on the lookout for somewhere quick and easy to grab a bite to eat in my lunch break (when I’m not organised enough to prep food at home to bring in). I usually opt for something to takeaway so I can eat at my desk. Feeling a bit bored of the usual sandwiches and panini’s I went to The Naked Deli which opened a few months ago at the top of Grey Street. There was a fridge with a range of sandwiches, wraps, juices and mouth watering ‘naked treats’. I was tempted with the deli salad bar but there was so much choice and the Halloumi with Naked Rub wrap caught my eye. I can’t resist anything with halloumi in it!

After ordering to takeaway I was given a number and told it would be brought out to me. Unfortunately my order got mixed up so I was brought the wrong wrap and the customer service wasn’t great after that, no communication and I had to chase my order up again. I finally got it after about a 20 minute wait, not great when you just pop out for a quick lunch.

I took it back to the office and as soon as I started eating it my previous frustrations disappeared. The food speaks for itself – it tastes fresh and the flavours of the halloumi, naked rub (what is that?!), and creamy avocado just work so well together.

Would I go back? Yes, the food is top quality and there’s a lot more on the menu I want to try. Everyone can have a bad day service wise so I wouldn’t hold that against them. I wouldn’t make it a regular lunch stop though, at £5.45 it would have to be an occasional treat.

Marco Polo

Marco Polo

Marco Polo has been in Newcastle for a very long time but for some reason I have never been until tonight, I don’t know why because I love Italian food. We actually got an Itison voucher from a friend for a meal there which was for pizza, pasta or risotto for two. We had a bit of late night Thursday shopping to do so I thought it would be a great post shopping treat.

We went in the door on the far right of the picture and sat in that first room, it’s like a small intimate Italian restaurant, you wouldn’t know the rest of it was there. I still don’t really know how it’s all connected. It had a good atmosphere and we could watch the bustle of the street outside as we dined.

With our voucher we could order anything from the pasta, pizza or risotto section of the menu except a couple of prawn dishes. The menu looked delicious and although I was very tempted to order the Risotto Pollo, my dinner companion was ordering pizza which is my favourite food ever and I didn’t want to get pizza envy so I caved. So he ordered the Proscuitto e Funghi (Italian ham, mushroom & oregano) and I ordered Florentina (blue cheese, pine nuts, spinach and egg). We also opted for a side of home cooked chips to share. Service was good, we didn’t have to wait very long for our meals to arrive. The pizza’s both looked and tasted great. The base was fresh, the egg on mine was cooked perfectly, the blue cheese was delicious and the pine nuts just added a bit of extra texture. The chips looked better than they tasted, I would say they were slightly under-cooked, some of the thicker ones were a bit hard in the middle but we still managed to get through most of them.

I’m now sitting at home with my feet up feeling rather full (and I didn’t even eat it all) and I’ve definitely had my pizza fix satisfied.

Would I go back? Yes, I can’t believe I haven’t been before!

Lone Wolf Ice Bar

Lone Wolf Ice Bar

I recently heard about the new pop up Lone Wolf ice bar at Stack and I had to try it. I’ve heard stories about ice bars in London and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do but there’s never been anything like this in Newcastle. I went on a Saturday and opted for the full Premium Adult package which includes your coat and glove hire, an ice shot, glass of prosecco (or beer) and a hot chocolate to warm you up when you come out. At £19.95 per person for 20 minutes in the bar I had high expectations.

When we arrived we were given our coats which were huge, grey and fluffy with big hoods, very cozy! Everyone has a prebooked time slot so you go in as a group and the door shuts behind you. The room is quite dark with eerie blue lighting, you feel the chill on your face but the coat is very good at keeping you warm. The bar is completely made of ice, as well as the seats and various impressive ice sculptures. My fave was the motorcycle that you can sit on (drafty if you’re wearing a skirt!).

The gloves provided don’t work with touch screen phones so they had to come off. For a place that advertises its ‘insta opportunities’ it could maybe think about investing in some touch screen gloves. Having said that, my hands didn’t feel too cold so it was fine to keep them off when taking photos.

The 20 minutes go pretty fast but it’s long enough to get photos taken with and on everything and it feels like enough time, no one wants to turn into a human ice sculpture! When we left the bar and walked outside it felt like stepping off a plane in the Caribbean with the temperature contrast (and this was late February in the north of England!).

It definitely met my expectations as a fun and different thing to try on a night out and it’s one to tick of the to do list.

Would I go again? Probably not, it’s the sort of place where once you’ve done it you’ve done it. At almost £1 a minute it’s not the type of place you’d just pop for a casual drink. Worth going for the experience and to have a date night with a difference though.

Hello!

Hello!

Thanks for visiting my blog!

A bit about me – I’m a thirty something ‘lady’ in the North East of England. No kids, no pets, I have a man, a house, and a full time job. I like going out for food and drinks and exploring the local area. I’m new to this blogging thing but I like doing things and I like writing so I thought I’d combine them and give it a whirl. I love the North East, it has everything you could want; a vibrant night life, abundance of restaurants, beautiful coastline, countryside on the doorstop and of course the picturesque Newcastle/Gateshead quayside. I am looking forward to visiting more places and sharing my experiences. cropped-img_0215-4-1.jpg
